What is the NDIS?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a world-first funding scheme that supports people with disabilities across Australia.
The Australian Government’s NDIS Act 2013 gave effect to its obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in New York, 2006, which aimed to:
“Promote, protect and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities, and to promote respect for their inherent dignity.”
A key goal of the NDIS is to support the independence and social and economic participation of the estimated 500,000 Australians with disability.
A government agency, the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), administers the NDIS. A separate government agency, the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission (NDIS Commission), aims to improve the quality and safety of NDIS supports and services.
Disability rights are human rights
In fact, the NDIS’ aims are similar to Casa’s mission 40 years ago: to support people with disabilities to participate fully at home, work and in their communities.
This mission begins with the recognition that people with disabilities have equal rights with all humans.
What supports can I get?
The NDIS offers funded disability support for accommodation, home help, personal care, transport, therapies, assistive technology/equipment, community access, activities and recreation, employment and more.
Businesses (disability support providers) provide supports, like those above, to people with disabilities who are on the NDIS (NDIS participants).
Casa Services is an NDIS support provider registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.
Casa’s supports to NDIS participants include:
- 24/7 Supported Independent Living (SIL) accommodation
- Culturally appropriate short-term accommodation and wheelchair-accessible units
- Daily activities (Day Programs) (e.g. art, cookery, and music)
- Transport
- Home help (e.g. meal preparation, gardening)
- Community access (e.g. shopping, picnics, recreation and sport)
